Unique Business Names

Do's and Don'ts

In todays fast paced, short attention span world, unique business names are an important part of your marketing plan.

Your marketing objective is to create a desire in your prospect to buy your product or services.

Your first priority is to get their attention.
In a postive way.

From surfing the net to hearing your business name mentioned, you have a precious few seconds to catch the attention and interest of your prospect.

How do you find unique business names?

One way is to use various name generating websites. They will allow you to enter different words that have some meaning to you (hopefully about your business) and then they will search for similar words, scramble them together and report the results.

Let's say I were starting a local hardware store and I used words to describe it like, local, hardware, store, helpful and inexpensive. The results I would get could be similar to these...

  • nexneha
  • stpetore
  • stsivful
  • nepenpen
  • arwarexp
  • hepensive
  • inesivve
  • ulenware
  • helpexve
  • hardtorware

Others naminig sites will suggest .com names that are available which is very helpful because having a similar domain name is a must for your marketing.

I typed in hardware on one site and this is what came back.

    olhardware.com, prhardware.com, hardwareal.com, hardwareat.com (for edible tools), hardwarecu.com, hardwaredo.com (for weird tools), hardwareen.com (for scary tools).

Yes, some sound stupid, others are usless. A total loss?

    No way.

The way you get a good idea is to have plenty of ideas.

Keep the best. Toss the rest.

Once you have a long list to peruse, use a few simple steps to choose your unique business name.

  • Keep it short...Quirky words can be unique and memorable but a short descriptive name is easier to remember, repeat and find on the web.

  • Be descriptive...Your not Xerox, Apple, Zappos or IBM. You're a small business with limited capital to market with. Right?

You are not planning on going global so give a hint (or full picture) of what you do in your business name. It will make the image stay with your customer longer and make it easier to find in phone books and directories.

A descriptive name helps you spell out what your business does with a lot less work (and advertising costs).

  • Imagine if...If you can create a name that leaves an image of your product or service in the prospects mind you have a stronger chance of being remembered. Ultra Brite Commercial Cleaning vs Joe's Cleaning Service . You decide. Color also helps in keeping an image from fading away. Some color inspire excitement Like red, where others like green and blue can be calming.

    Yep I thought so.

  • Be POSITIVE...Words carry an emotional feeling and a literal meaning. Leave your customer with an uplifting image in their mind. An image that you want to convey. If you want a strong impact "Spiffy's Bodybuilding Shoppe" misses the mark, where "Rock Hard Bodybuilding Gym" reaches you market.

Having a unique business name makes it a lot easier to market effectively. Without it ...it's tough.

Like bowling with a square ball. You might knock down a few pins but you are really going to work for it.
