Old Commercial Jingles
"Jingles That Snap, Crackle & Pop! "
Old commercial jingles have their origination date back in the early 1920's. We don't know who created the first jingle but we have the story on the first successful promotion that started the jingle avalanche.
The trophy goes to the Wheaties campaign in 1926. On Christmas Eve General Mills aired an advertisement with their tag line being "Have You Tried Wheaties?".
General Mills Wheaties brand was dying and this was their last attempt before giving up. They used an all-male group of singers that were later called "The Wheaties Quartet".
The Wheaties jingle started out with:
Have you tried Wheaties? They’re whole wheat with all of the bran. Won’t you try Wheaties? For wheat is the best food of man.

Not exactly a tune that would grab us today but back then it saved at dying brand. It created a national sensation. It not only brought Wheaties back to life but it showed General Mills the key component in reviving their brand.
The marketing department noticed that 3/5 of the product was bought in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area which was the only location where the jingle was being aired at the time.
Seeing such incredible results, General Mills changed course and purchased commercial time nationwide for their new advertising juggernaut.
Sales continued to climb and the breakfast of champions is still around today because of the few simple words combined with the tune.
Other companies were paying close attention to this new method of advertising and quickly jumped on the bandwagon with their own products. Throughout the years these products have been in the forefront of national awareness and still decades later in the back recesses of our minds.
It amazes me how we can forget important names and information yet some of the craziest ads will stay with us forever.
Here are a few of the old old timers and another page of the not so old commercial jingles.
Enjoy.
